If premium meats are listed after legumes, grains, or by-products, they’re likely just a small part of the recipe.

2. Check the Ingredient Order

Ingredients are listed by weight. That means the first few items make up most of the food. Look for a clearly named meat like “chicken” or “turkey” first—not vague terms like “meat meal” or “animal fat.” Be cautious of ingredient splitting too—when brands list “peas,” “pea protein,” and “pea flour” separately to push them further down the list. They still add up.
