Sit. Stay. Speak. is a series of educational pet clinics. Each session features a specific topic and guest speaker who is a professional of the field. Every session will end with an open Q&A.

These clinics are for YOU! Please leave the cats and dogs at home unless otherwise specified.

2013 Agenda:

-January 12th - An Introduction to Dog Agility: Chaar Dog Trainers Susan Gasper and Debi ElChaar introduce the fun and engaging sport of Dog Agility. Bring your dog for a free trial class and test his skills and confidence!

-February 9th - MUSH! - Sled Dogs: Susi Marsh from Arctic Paws Pocono Sled Dog Tours introduces two of her Siberian Huskies "Wile E" and "Coco" from her team and talks about the exciting life of a sled dog. Learn about the unique training for these northern breeds, check out a real musher's sled and get some hands-on experience in harnessing the dogs up! 

-March 9th - All About Clicker: Take your dog's training to the next level with shaping and trick-training in this free introductory clicker training seminar. Chaar Dog Trainer Susan Gasper will show you how clicker training can turn your dog into a ready-to-train companion. Learn how to shape your dog's focus using the positive reinforcement of a clicker.

-April 13th - Pet First Aid and Veterinary Care: Dr. Schwabe, DVM of Pleasant Valley Animal Hospital talks about home first aid care for your cat and dog: recognizing the signs of a true emergency; how to care for minor wounds and ailments; the necessary items to have in your Pet First Aid Kit; how to dose and give medication, and much more.

-May 11th - Try Agility! - With Chaar Dog Trainers Susan Gasper & Debi ElChaar. Bring your dog for an introduction to Agility. Agility class is fun, engaging and great for hi-energy dogs.

-June 8th - Canine Good Citizen - with Dog trainer Debi ElChaar. Tips, tricks, and quick methods to help your dog be the best citizen he can be!

-July 13th -No seminar. Enjoy your summer vacations!

-August 10th - Allentown Police K9 Unit Demo - Meet a local K9 Hero and learn how he trained to keep the city of Allentown safe. See this dog and his partner in action in a bite demo!

-September 14th - Bethlehem Mounted Police - Meet the hooved and helmeted heros of Bethlehem!

-November 9th - Pet Nutrition - Learn about how your pet's diet effects his health; how a dog's and cat's nutritional needs differ; what to look for in a healthy pet food; and how to select the right diet for your pet.

2012:

-January 14th - Training Methods: Learn about the different types of training methods, their uses and approaches, and see what's best for your dog. Featuring Dog Trainer Debi ElChaar.

-February 11th - Rally O, Tracking and Agility:  Rally Obedience and Competitive Tracking Judge and Trainer Dawn Martin will introduce to you these two great dog sports that are as much fun for you as it is for the dog! Also Janet Frank will show you the fun and exciting world of Agility.

-March 10th - Herding / Field Trials & Hunting: Meet the working companion dogs. Learn about the world of Field Trials, Hunting and Herding, the techniques used to train and master these unique skills, and see some cool demos of these dogs in action! Featuring Sheep Dog Trials Competitor Nancy Ortiz and AKC Field Trials & Hunt Test Judge Missy Lemoi.

-April 14th - Canine Behavior and the 4 Quadrants of Learning: Sometimes dog owners actually teach their dogs bad habits (accidentally, of course!) because they are not looking at what is being reinforced. How can we avoid teaching bad habits even fear and aggression? But conversely, how we can undo some of those bad habits? Dog Trainer Jean Brown shows you the how-to and how-not-to’s of dog training.

-May 12th - New Puppy: We’ll discuss critical learning periods (birth to 2 years old) and normal puppy behaviors; as well as Prey, Pack and Defensive Drives. An understanding of these topics can be helpful when relating to dogs of all ages. Dog Trainer Debi ElChaar will share these helpful tips for people who are looking for a new companion or are already proud pet parents.

-June 9th - Homeopathic Pet Remedies: HomeoPet National OTC Sales Manager Jodi King explains homeopathic remedies, how they compare to conventional medicines and other natural products, and what they can do for your cat, dog, or horse. Learn about the research behind HomeoPet and see the evidence of its effectiveness on many common pet ailments such as joint issues, anxiety, parasites, skin and coat issues, and more!

-July 14th - Feline Health: Common Issues, Ailments & Misconceptions
Learn the importance of feline vaccinations, regular wellness vet visits, dental care, worming, proper diet and how to tell the warning signs of some common feline health issues (that often are misconstrued as behavioral problems). Plus! Your cat and the carrier - how to make it work.
Dr. Renee Ziegler-Post, DVM. of "Just for Cats" Veterinary Clinic explains these subjects and answers your questions.

-August 11th - Finding Forever Homes: Pet Shelters, Rescues & The Adoption Process
Learn about all the work that goes into running a shelter or animal rescue and what the day in the life of a shelter worker / animal looks like; find out how you can help by volunteering your time, your home, or making a simple donation. For anyone looking to adopt: learn about the adoption process and what to expect, such as interviews, home visits, pet and family visits, fees, and post-adoption requirements.

-September 8th - Safe & Hound: K9 Police Units & Rescue Dog Teams
Get to know some local four-legged heroes. Meet one of the Bethlehem Police K9 Unit teams and also "Storm" and his owner David Powers from the Lehigh Valley Search & Rescue. Learn how these special dogs are trained to protect, locate, and help save lives. See some cool demos of these dogs in action and find out what it takes to be a K9 hero.

-October 13th - Follow Your Nose: Fire Department Arson Dog
Allentown Asst. Fire Chief Lee Laubach introduces "Judge" the yellow labrador fire arson dog. Learn how Judge was taught to sniff out over 60 types of fire accelerants such as diesel fuel and lighter fluid and how he helps firefighters pinpoint the source of fires. Judge will demonstrate his skillful sniffer and show you how an arson dog gets the job done.

-November 17th - Doggie Holiday Portraits
Get a professional holiday portrait of your pooch with Santa or in a holiday scene for a $2.00 cash donation to the Bethlehem Mounted Police Unit. Donations to be collected at time of portrait. Picture will be delivered by email. No sign-up necessary. First come first serve basis.

-December 8th - Therapy Dogs and What They Do
Trainer and TDInc Tester Joel Schwartz introduces his Therapy Dog "Hilda" and talks about how the Therapy Dog program helps people all over the world. Learn about the training and testing process, how to tell if your dog may make a good Therapy Dog candidate, and what a day in the life of a Therapy Dog is like.
