Places to Hike in and around the Lehigh Valley

Sun Jan 29th 2017

Craving some nature? Residents of Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton and the greater Lehigh Valley have lots of choices for hiking that are within an hour or less driving. Check back again because we'll keep updating the list with more details and photos. For now, here is the short list:

Jacobsburg State Park - 16 miles from Bethlehem. This link gives you the parking location for the Henry's Woods Trail, one of the most popular hikes at Jacobsburg. The Henry's Woods loop is about 1.6 miles long and of moderate difficulty. Feel free to explore other trails in Jacobsburg which can be accessed from a variety of parking locations along Bellfast Rd, State Park Rd, and Jacobsburg Rd. Some areas of Jacobsburg Park are open to hunting, so be sure to wear blaze orange during the fall hunting seasons.

Appalachian Trail in Danielsville - 19 Miles from Bethlehem. Look our for a gravel parking lot on the left side of the road (if coming from the south). After you park walk north along the dirt road for 250 feet until you arrive at the Appalachian Tail. You can follow the trail either to the west or across the road to the east. This isn't the most scenic hike, but there are a few overlooks in either direction plus it provides good exercise and is never crowded. Difficulty level is moderate, but wear good shoes because the trail is fairly rocky. This segment of the AT isn't a loop so the distance is as long or short as you want to make it.

Glenn Onoko - 35 miles from Bethlehem. This link gives you the parking location for the Glenn Onoko Falls Trail at the Lehigh Gorge State Park. The hike up the falls and back is only about 2.5 miles, but is a rather steep and challenging hike. We recommend using appropriate hiking footwear to stay safe. The well prepared hiker will enjoy multiple waterfalls and a stunning view from the top of the last waterfall.
